The 20th anniversary Royal Television Society awards for the North East and Borders are taking place at The Sage Gateshead, and was the biggest TV awards event ever held outside of London.

For the first time the RTS introduced a Viewers’ Vote category, where the public have been able to choose their favourite show from the past 20 years from a selected shortlist. Hundreds of viewers have cast their votes, and the winner was The Dales Diary.

Graeme Thompson, chair of the RTS, said: "We’ve had long waiting lists to attend these awards for several years now, so it’s great that this year we’ve been able to show off the region’s creativity to the larger audience it deserves."

From the 'entertainment' area of the Best Drama or Entertainment Programme category, the judges greatly admired the work of Lesley Duncanson from 7 Stories, Newcastle Upon Tyne. They praised it for its 'sense of ambition' in SEVEN STORIES FOR SEVEN STORIES, and noted how a small budget didn't prevent some great graphics, clever ideas and effects, and above all the use of 'A list' actors.

The event was supported by many of the region’s major companies and organisations including regional screen agency, Northern Film and Media, with overall sponsorship from regional development agency One NorthEast. The ceremony was hosted by ITV news presenter Nicholas Owen who is due to move to BBC News 24 next month.
