Our 'Grow your own media lab' project took place at two locations in the North East Throckley and Washington.
The two labs were both aimed at the users of the local community, introducing them to open source technology which can help develop and sustain a resource for their own respective communities. OpenSource provides free equivalents of expensive licensed software such as Photoshop for image editing, sound editing software, web page design. There were lots of free tools for communities to use to communicate with each other, build networks and share ideas. Alongside the two labs there were also a couple of workshops.
Polytechnic delivered an intro to accessing and working with Open Source technologies. The workshops were suitable for people of all levels of ability. The applications were very user friendly. We supplied a range of discs for you to take away and test on your own. Using a 'live Linux distribution', an operating system that runs from the cdrom drive of your PC the session will explore audio production, video editing, image manipulation, DJ & Vj'ing, 3d modelling and streaming.
There was also an open evening, designed for Middlesbrough teachers interested in exploring multimedia practice in their delivery.
More information on the website - http://ptechnic.org/gyoml/gyoml-av.html More will be added soon when our artists in residence join us.
