Freelance animation film maker - I make personal films and work on educational and community based projects.

What motivates and inspires you?
In my work, I am inspired by people and personal stories.  Personally, I come from a working class background and a town with very few prospects, but when I was young I spent a few years living in Berlin and I think this inspired me to strive for experiences outside of my immediate area and upbringing.  Also my mum encouraged me to follow a career I was excited by.

How did you get where you are now?
I have always been artistic and have been lucky to continue that through university and now an MA.  I have always worked hard to get the experiences I need to work in film making.

What’s your current project?
An animated documentary about a childhood of living with the Berlin wall, based on my personal experience.

Where has your work been showcased?
Film festivals world-wide, TV.

In Newcastle the Tyneside Cinema has supported me and had confidence in me right from when I was still at University.  Film festivals are always helpful, especially Tricky Women in Vienna who have continued to screen my work to various audiences.  Also friends - some of whom are also colleagues - have been a great source of advice and support.

 

What advice would you give to women starting out in the digital environment?
Just go for it, if you want to make something.  Also, show it to lots of people and get feedback - it helps you to grow.

What barriers have you come up against in your work?
Time - I never have enough time as I seem to make projects bigger than they need to be.

Do you have a mentor, or someone whose work or attitude you admire?
Yes, I admire the work of Alys Hawkins who makes animated films.  And she is always available to give me good advice.
