Nicola and Kelly Lumley astro+prism

For eleven years, these sisters have been doing it for themselves…as well as crossing technical and artistic boundaries with film-makers, animators, dancers, theatre directors, graphic artists, graffiti artists and music producers.

Best known as astro+prism, they provide the North East with café/gallery events, regular club nights, multi-media events and large-scale commissioned outdoor events.

They provide much-needed support for local rising talent whilst pursuing their own unique artistic expression.

What they do
astro+prism constantly mutate their approach to production and performance. Every gig explores fresh creative techniques, transcending boundaries. They challenge themselves and their committed audience. They enjoy this commitment to open-minded crossover experimentation.

What people say about them…
“Nicola and her sister Kelly have for a long time now been the hippest DJs in the North East ” Tina Gharavi, Director, Closer - 2000.

Biog

Early 1990s : the sisters were crucial in giving Tyneside much-needed credibility on the underground dance scene with their DJ/Promotion partnership Salad Butty, which exploded warehouse parties in the early 1990s. From this launch pad, the pair went on to play alongside Andrew Wethearall, Speedy J, Laurent Garnier, Luke Slater and ToRoccoco Rot.

2000 :
astro+prism launched, in collaboration with A String Thing. This audacious electro-acoustic crossover initially broadcast as part of a Northern Arts funded 48-hour A/V webcast, Livestock , at the Arc arts centre in Stockton upon Tees.

June 2003 : The collaboration grew into a larger collective of artists and has incorporated film, animation, video and dance, culminating in The Refrigerator performed at the Tyneside Cinema, produced by Forma Arts and Media.

2003 :
astro's work on the short film Closer by Tina Gharavi received the Czech Radio Award. Her award winning sound design for film/animation has been screened internationally and archived in the British Council.

The Refrigerator now has backing from the Arts Council of England and the PRS Foundation. In partnership with worldwide interdisciplinary producing agency, Forma, this fantastic, multi-media performance will now be duly recognised much further afield.

What now ?....
astro+prism are currently exploring new audio/visual techniques and continue to regularly perform. Never ones to stand still sonically, astro+prism are producing electro/breakbeat/fat bass tracks that they perform live, with processed vocals. Recent gigs include Club Dogma in Edinburgh and The Hive with Aparat (bPitch control) at the FACT Centre in Liverpool.

The duo have provided workshops in dj skills; music technology and mentoring schemes, often targeting women and disadvantaged young people in the community. Their approach also involves passing on their fundraising; performance; workshop/leadership and collaborative skills. Recent projects include establishing a multi-cultural women's electro acoustic music group in Newcastle.
